SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION

SERVICE BY COMMITTEEMEN FULL LIST OF PAST TEACHERS. LONG TERMS OF SERVICE. The Otakeho school was opened on September 9, 1884. The first building was a single room,. but later, additions were made to the building. The playground was originally covered with light bush and flax, and there was evidence that in the early days before .settlement there' had been much tribal war among the Maoris of the district. To-day the grounds are prettily laid out, and have been well cared for by successive committees. The school was under the Wanganui Education Board .until. 1916, and. at the meeting of. the board in July, 1884' it was decided to offer the new school to Mr F. Stewart of the Wanganui Boys’ School. Although appointed on August 26 it was not until November that he was able to fill the position, and Mr H. Coventry acted as master from the opening until November 16. Many connected with the Otakeho school have given long years of service, but the record belongs to Mr J. Honore, who was head teacher for 27 years and 9 months.

Mr H. J. Eaves is another who has been associated with the school for a long period, being chairman of the committee for 16 years. Sir William le Fleming was chairman for ( l2 years, and a member of the committee fpr 21 years. His son, Mr S. H. le Fleming, has been chairman for the . past six years. Mr L. S. Mackie was secretary for several years. In '1917 the school was enlarged at a cost of over £2OO, and in 1923 and 1924 much was expended on the planting of trees and concrete paths. In 1927 the library was added to with a considerable number of new books. Following is a record of teachers and committees: HEAD TEACHERS’ SERVICE H.
