PLUNKET BABY CROWNED

BARRY BOON KING OF CARNIVAL

Baby Barry Boon, central candidate in the. recent Plunket carnival, was crowned' on Saturday afternoon in St. Mary’s Hall before a large gathering of his contemporaries and their parents. The stage was decorated with bowls of golden chrysanthemums,_ holly and copper beech. The throne in tn® centre, which had a seat of only about 12 inches across and looked suspiciously like a high chair, was twined with blue Michaelmas daisies and red rambler roses.. The event began very merrily and informally at two o’clock when a crown of children and one dog commenced racing and sliding along the hall. Upon the arrival of Mrs White and Mrs Locke, who had come from Waitara in order to provide the music for the entertainment, they joined in polkas, marches and musical bumps, organised by members of the committee. Miss Dorothy Cock, dressed as a butterfly, entertained the fascinate! young spectators with a toe dance. The coronation ceremony took place at. three o’clock. Mrs L. R. Curtis, president of the New Plymouth branch, made a short speech, interrupted at intervals by gurgles from the throne. She expressed her pleasure in the great success of the campaign. The sum of £224 had been raised for New Plymouth and £3B went to the Waitara branch. It was a tribute to the organisation and _ cooneration of the committee, especially as it was a time when several other calls had been made upon the public. Aliette Weston then crowned Baby Boon, who submitted regally and was unperturbed by the applause. He and the other three candidates, Barbara White, .Handley Brown and Alastair Dugdale, were each presented with a silver egg cup, engraved with their names. Mrs Curtis called for three cheers for the candidates and their parents‘ After the crowning the members of the committee served the children with afternoon tea.
