HAWERA TRACK ACTIVITY
SATURDAY MORNING’S GALLOPS. CARFEX AND THE TIGER PLEASE. Track - work at Hawera on Saturday was interesting, as the majority of the horses were either schooled or given their winding-up gallops. Both the outside of the course proper and the trial grass were in first-class order for fast work. The former was much the slower. On the course proper Royal Peak (Grylls) received an advantage' at the start of a five furlongs trial with Round Table and held it throughout, to be a length and a-half ahead at the post in the poor time of lm. 9 2-ss. Little notice need be taken of this gallop, for both are capable of much better. Copey (Tucker), Monaghan (Sheild). and Gibraltar (G. Duncan) were associated in a working gallop over a mile, all hitting out in good style. St. Clara (Grindley) and Fantastic (McLaughlin) set out together from the six furlong barrier post, but after covering three furlongs Fantastic hit a peg and fell. St. Clara went on alone to finish in lm. 225. As usual St. Clara worked pleasingly. Neither Fantastic nor her rider was any the worse for the fall. An exceptionally smart gallbp was registered by Carfex (Cole) and Diagano (Vaughan), who left five furlongs behind in lm. 4 l-ss. It was a really good effolt for the slower track. Carfex was a neck in front at the close. He worked Impressively and now appears likely to be one of the hard ones to beat in the Flying Handicap on Wednesday. Diagano also pleased arid is evidently back at his best. Taitoru (Duncan) hit out much more freely than he has done of late to record lm. 5 4-ss. for five furlongs—a useful effort for a hack. He has almost completely thrown off his soreness. Colossal (Duncan) sprinted half a mile in 52 l-ss. unaccompanied. He is a likely maiden, who should soon be a winner in his class. Beau Star (Flower) led Million (Trillo) all the way over five furlongs, finishing half a length in front in lm. Bs. Million appeared to be slightly “tied up and seems to be feeling the effects of her recent hard racing. The trial grass was considerably faster than the course proper, but there was not a great dial of work on it. One Whetu (Sheild) and Sandlark (Feasey) were together at the finish of half a mile in 51 l-ss. Bothworked well, but Sandlark had more in reserve during the final stages. The Tiger (Cochrane) dashed over, a similar distance in 49 3-ss. A reproduction of this form on Wednesday should find him troubling the opposition, particularly during the first two or three furlongs. In a schooling effort Copey (Tucker) gave a perfect exhibition over four fences—a brush, sod wall, post and rails and hencoop. Owner-Trainer J. Fryer is giving Copey plenty of solid work now, and it seems almost certain that the Marble Arch gelding will be fit to take his place in the field for the Egmont Steeplechase. Chief Line (Conway) and Stanchion (Tucker) were responsible for a fast .round over the schooling hurdles. Chief Line jrnnped slightly the better, but Stanchion also went really well. It was the best display given by Stanchion to date. Richfield (Grindley) and Fantastic (Grylls/ were companions in a similar task. Richfield jumped exceptionally well throughout, taking his fences like an “old stager” at the game. Fantastic was not nearly as impressive as the Acre gelding. An interesting newcomer to school over a round of the fences was Alloy (McLaughlin). He jumped slowly but safely, and with more experience should .fence quite well. He is -an
runner in the Mcßae Memorial but may be given a run in the hurdle event on the second day. ' Royal Bengal, Cawbeen, De Trop, Brown Abbey, Arouse, Ingenuity, Bon Aryan, Eara, Autumn Leaf, Ruri, Silk Sox, General Quex, Golden Promise, Nigger Minstrel filly, Oriel, Lord Quex colt, Gascony filly and Mint Leaf gelding were all apportioned pacework on the two-year-old track.
