ST. MARY’S ORGAN RECITALS

SERIES CONTINUED LAST NIGHT. For his first contribution to the short musical recital that followed evensong at St. Mary’s Church, New Plymouth, last night the organist, Mr. R. N. Renaud, chose Dr. S. E. Wesley's Andante in E. Flat. Dr. Wesley was organist at Winchester Cathedral for some years and most of his compositions are of church music. The Andante is calm, restful, English in character, and giving the atmosphere of worship, repose and reserve for which Dr. Wesley’s work is noted. Mr. Basil Collinge sang “Comfort Ye” and “Every Valley,” from Handel’s Messiah, with much feeling. The contrast between the pleading of the first and the triumph of the second recitative was well brought out. The final item was Handel s Concerto in F, more often known as the “Cuckoo and Nightingale” concerto. In this the composer is in one of his lighter moods. He seems determined to show what can be done with a joyous theme joyously interwoven with melody.
