THE QUEEN CARNIVAL There was a large attendance in the Town Hall on Monday night to see the final count of votes in the Queen Carnival. Good business was done at the stalls and sideshows. After Miss Gladys Baylis (Plunket candidate) was declared elected, Mr C. O. Edmonds, on behalf of the Seaside Society, thanked the candidates and their committees for the way they had worked, and congratulated them on their sportsmanship. He then called on the chairmen of the respective committees to speak. Mr W. Gunson (Plunket committee) thanked everyone for their support, especially Mr and Mrs C. Whiting for their help with pictures, etc., also Mr. R. Hughson and Mr. Phillips. He congratulated the other candidates and called for cheers for them, and these were heartily given. Cheers were also given for the Plunket Queen. Mr A. Stone (Business) and Mr R. Hughson (Sports) also returned thanks. Miss Gladys Baylis, the Queen, who was carried shoulder high to the stage, thanked her committee and supporters for the honour bestowed, upon, her and congratulated Miss J. McCullum (Business) and Miss M. Barney (Sports) on their sportsmanship. • , Refresher Course. There was a good attendance of teachers from the schools in the Egmont district at the refresher course conducted by Misses M. Blackbume and A. Kennedy, of the Auckland Training College, at the Opunake' school on Monday and Tuesday. 'Demonstrations in physical education by Miss Blackburne, and in handwork by Miss Kennedy occupied the major part of the course. Educational Institute. At a meeting of the management committee of the Egmont branch of - the N.Z.E.1., the resignation of Mr W. H. Burgess from the office of president of the branch and delegate to the N;Z.E.I. was accepted with regret. The meeting referred to Mr Burgess’ efforts in connection with 1 the work of the branch and a vote of thanks was accorded him by acclamation. Mr. L. M; Fairbrother (Auroa) was appointed delegate to the N.Z.E.I. in place of Mr Burgess.
