SALES OF SHEEP AND CATTLE REPORT FROM WESTFIELD YARDS. “FIRM TONE IN ALL SECTIONS.” Auckland, April 24. There was a firm tone in all sections at the Westfield sale to-day. Fewer cattle were penned, but there was no improvement in prices, though bidding was brisk and the demand better. Extra choice ox beef made 20s per 1001 b.; choice and prime, 17s to 19s; secondary and plain, 15s to 16s; prime young cow and heifer beef, 15s to 19s; and ordinary cow beef, 10s to 14s. Extra heavy prime steers made £8 to £8 7s 6d; heavy prime, £7 to £7 17s 6d; lighter prime, £5 15s to £6 17s 6d; light prime, £5 to £5 12s 6d; small and unfinished, £3 10s to £4 17s 6d; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, £4 10s to £5 10s; heavy prime, £3 10s to £4 7s 6d; lighter prime, £2 5s to £3 7s 6d; other killable cows, £1 10s to £2 2s 6d. . There was a larger yarding of sheep, including a fair proportion of-well-fin-ished wethers, which sold at slightly higher values. Ewes also sold well at advanced rates for good sorts. NO PRICE ALTERATION PRIME MEDIUM WEIGHT BULLOCKS COMPETITION AT JOHNSONVILLE. Wellington, April 24. At the Johnsonville sale to-day, Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., and Abraham and Williams Ltd. offered an average yarding of cattle and a smaller yarding of sheep and lambs. The cattle comprised chiefly prime medium-weight bullocks. Competition was keen, with prices showing no alteration. There was a smaller yarding of cows and heifers of good quality, with prices showing an easing of 5s per head on last week. There was an average yarding of vealers of good quality, prices being easier at late rates. There was little demand for wethers, only well-finished sheep being sought after. Plain sorts were unsaleable, with no alteration in prices, for heavy sheep. The ewes yarded were of exceptionally good quality, with a limited demand at prices on a par. Owing to the high prices ruling in the paddock for lambs for export, very, few butchers operated, only a. few pens being sold, prices for prime heavy lambs being slightly easier than last week’s rates.
