THE UNEMPLOYMENT BOARD

STRONG COMMENT AT ASHBURTON.

NO LOCAL EFFORT THIS YEAR.

By Telegraph—Press Association.

Ashburton, April 17.

The opinion of the Borough Council in regard to the Unemployment Board’s policy of penalising towns which make a special effort to assist their unemployed and cutting down weekly allocations for relief workers’ wages because of these efforts was expressed in strong terms at a meeting of the council, when it was stated that no measure for procuring extra relief for distressed families would be undertaken by residents of the borough or county this year. Last year's special drive realised £l7OO.

It was resolved to ask the Unemployment Board for an undertaking that borough allocations should not be penalised in any way because of emergency measures taken by residents.
