President Roosevelt plans to sail on June 23 on a cruise to the West Indies, Panama and Hawaii in a cruiser with a destroyer escort, states a Washington cable.

The death has occurred of Mr. Andrew Spence Chimside, aged 81, one of the founders of the Victorian Amateur Turf Club, says a Melbourne cable. He won the Melbourne Cup and two Caulfield Cups.

Police Inspector D. C. Fraser, who has been transferred on promotion as a superintendent to Dunedin, was farewelled by members of the Hamilton police force on the eve of his departure for the south, states a Press Association message. Inspector Fraser was formerly at New Plymouth.

The death occurred at Christchurch yesterday of Captain Gilbert Brown, aged 92 years, who for 40 years was a well-known figure in the coastal shipping trade in New Zealand, says a Press Association message. His last discharge was dated 1925, when he was 82 years of age.

Sympathy with Mr. V. Barton in his illness was expressed at yesterday’s meeting of the Taranaki Education Board. Mr. Barton had accepted the appointment as headmaster of the Ohura District High School, but had only been in office for a week when he became fil. Among the many messages of congratulation received on Monday by Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Foreman was one from the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe. His Excellency’s telegram said: “I am most interested to hear that to-day you celebrate the 65th anniversary of your wedding. Her Excellency and I send you warmest congratulations and trust that you may live to enjoy many more happy years together.” Congratulations were also received from Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P. Mr. E. C. Fussell, late of the National Bank of New Zealand, has been appointed to the staff of the Reserve Bank, states a Wellington Press Association message. For the time being he will act as private secretary to the governor of the bank. Mr. Fussell, who has been for several years on the head office staff of the National Bank of New Zealand, as private secretary to the general manager, Sir James Grose, is regarded as one of the most brilliant students in the banking profession in the Dominion. In company with Mr. J. Shaw and. Mr. T. G. A. Harle, Mr. Fussell recently presented the evidence on behalf of the Associated Banks to the Monetary Commission. Mr. Fussell’s able handling of the banks’ case in oral evidence and under cross-examination by members of the commission was a notable achievement.
