NORMANBY TOWN BOARD

SUBSIDY FROM HAWERA COUNTY.

60 PER CENT. RATES OUTSTANDING.

The monthly meeting of the Normanby Town Board was held on Tuesday, there being present Messrs. P. J. Leydon (chairman), T. Lloyd, W. J. Taylor and G. Galloway. The ranger, Mr. C. W. Hardway, reporter having impounded two heifers during the month and having collected £2 in dog registration tees. The Hawera County Council advised that the agreement for subsidising road expenditure at Normanby would expire in May and it would be necessary to hold a meeting to decide whether another agreement could be reached for the ensuing year. The appointment of representatives to discuss the question with the council was held over till the next meeting.

The clerk, Mr. H. D. Hughes, reported that only about 30 per cent, of this year’s rates had been collected in spite of the warning of the impending 10 per cent, penalty. It was decided to empower the chairman to use his discretion in accepting satisfactory payments on outstanding rates. The works committee was authorised to arrange for the continuation of work at the metal pit. The chairman reported having inspected the hall and put forth suggestions for improvements that could be carried out without great outlay. It was decided to carry out the suggestions. It was left to the chairman to interview the South Taranaki Power Board to obtain quotes for alterations to the lighting and the installation of two new lights in the hall. A member said he had received complaints about the inadequate lighting of the streets and the clerk was instructed to ascertain whether the full power was being used. Short meetings of the domain and cemetery boards were held, the members commenting on the excellent order of both grounds. It was decided to plant seedlings for spring flowering in the domain. PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P., president of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, paid a brief visit to Hawera yesterday. Bro. J. Vinten, Noble Grand of the Loyal Union (Hawera) Lodge, M.U.1.0.0. F., was given best wishes for his approaching marriage by lodge members on Tuesday. In presenting him with a silver cake dish I.P.N.G. Bro. C. J. McFadyen said much of the credit for the lodge’s second successive win in the Taranaki ritual competition was due to Bro. Vinten’s, work.

The funeral of the late Mr. Claude Stacey took place at the Patea cemetery yesterday afternoon, the Rev. W. H. Walton officiating at the graveside. Mr. Stacey, who died at Hawera on Monday night following a brief illness, was 44 years of age and was well known throughout the district. He saw service during the Great War and was a member of the Patea Returned Soldiers’ Association, representatives of which followed the cortege and assisted as pall-bearers. Many of the staff of the Patea freezing works, where Mr. Stacey was employed, were present. He is survived by a widow and two children. RETURNED SOLDIERS AT ALTON. „ NEW MEMBERS ENROLLED. / The president, Dr. W. T. Simmons, and executive members of the Patea Returned Soldiers’ Association addressed a meeting of Alton ex-servicemen with a view to securing their interest in the work ana objects of that body. The president’s remarks were supported by Lieutenant R. W. Haddow and the secretary, Mr. A. A. Carey. The returned men were asked to make an effort to attend the Anzac memorial service in the Patea domain. Nine new members were enrolled at the conclusion of the meeting. PATEA PRIMARY SCHOOL. COMMITTEE’S ANNUAL REPORT. Reporting to the annual meeting of Patea householders on Monday, the headmaster, Mr. W. T. Armstrong, said the roll number was 174 and the average attendance 158.1, attendances being affected by an epidemic of measles, the worst of which had apparently passed. The school had been inspected 6y Mr. E. Crosby, whose report was very favourable. The committee submitted a report which stated that it had maintained careful supervision of the grounds, the horse paddock levelling having been completed, providing a football paddock for the school. Mr. L. Row and Mr. R. H. Mays gave assistance in this connection. Hedges and wire fences had received attention, resulting in a generally improved appearance of grounds and school. The school break-up concert was an outstanding success, assistance being given by Mr. Whittington, Scouts, Cubs and Guides. The school picnic in the domain was attended by a large number of children, Messrs. Locker, Gardiner, Glenny, McKenna and the ladies’ committee contributing largely to its success. The school swimming bath was not used, chiefly owing to the weather. The committee had been able to keep within the limit' of its capitation grants. It was recommended that the incoming committee use the credit in the special account to commence asphalting the terrace adjacent to the school. Credits of £l4 12s and £5B 2s lid were reported in the general and special accounts.

The report and balance-sheet were adopted. Mr. Mays said he was unable to submit a full report on dental clinic work. It was a matter for regret that parents were still apathetic regarding the clinic.

Smith and Trim Limited, Hawera, advertise particulars of their mart sales for to-day of 300 cases of fruit, including tomatoes celery and rock melons, at 11 a.m. and South Island table potatoes, wheat, useful sundries and furniture at 1.30 p.m., followed by the balance of the fruit. Attention is drawn to the Hawera Borough Council’s advertisement inviting applications for an assistant working foreman. The annual meeting of the Waverley branch of the Farmers’ Union will be held at the Town Board office at 7.30 p.m. to-morrow. Particulars are advertised.
