ENTERTAINMENT BY SCOTS

INGLESIDE AT RAWHITIROA. AN ENJOYABLE PROGRAMME. Bagpipes heralded the arrival of the chief and concert party of the Taranaki Provincial Scottish Society when they visited Rawhitiroa Hall on Thursday night to conduct an ingleside. at the invitation of the hall committee. There was a large attendance of residents,and visitors from all parts of Central Taranaki. The hall was tastefully decorated with streamers. Songs were given by Mesdames Crabbe and Kilpatrick, Miss M. Brown and Messrs. G. McIsaacs and P. T. Aitken. Miss Eva Longstaffe pleased the audience with elocutionary numbers, and Miss Eileen Peebles gave an exhibition of Highland dancing to the bagpipe music of Pipe-Major C. Morrison, Eltham. Scottish recitations by Mr. G. Littlejohn completed the concert programme. . The audience showed its appreciation of the artists in no uncertain manner and all had to respond to encores. Accompaniments were played by Miss G. Galbraith. Brilliant lighting suddenly gave way to complete darkness and the haggis ceremony was performed. Preceded by Piper Hunter, Stratford, the haggis, surrounded by candles, was' borne by Pipe-Major Morrison and placed in front of Chief T. W. Smith who recited Burns’ Ode to the Supper was then served by the hall committee, assisted by Mesdames J. Cocker, O. Gemhoefer and G. V. Thame. On behalf of the hall committee and settlers Mr. G. N. Thame extended a welcome to the Scottish Society members and assured them that their visit was highly appreciated. Chief T. W. Smith expressed the pleasure of the society a revisiting Rawhitiroa where, on a previous occasion, it had met with a very warm welcome. Dance music was supplied by the Thistle Orchestra and extras were played by Miss M. Brown and Mr. Dick Silver. Mr. J. Morrison, Stratford, was master of ceremonies.

A competition for a box of biscuits donated by Mr. C. A. Belcher, Eltham, was won by Mrs. C. J. McDonald, Ngaere. Prizes for a Monte Carlo waltz were won by Mr. L. O’Connor and Miss E. Cocker. General and Personal. Good progress is being made with the rehearsal of two plays to be staged soon by the Rawhitiroa Women’s Institute. Under the direction of Mr. F. E. Silver the casts have been hard at work for some weeks. Mesdames J. MacLaughlin and F. E. Silver and Miss I. Bleakley entertained the players at practice during the week. • Miss C. Blackbum, who has been the guest of Miss G. Ware, has returned to Palmerston North. Miss Gwen Ware is on holiday at Palmerston North. v Miss Pauline Pruden is holidaying at New Plymouth. Miss Phyllis Wood, of the nursing staff of the Dannevirke hospital, is on a holiday visit to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. Wood.
