CROSSING WITH RED DEER
WAPITI IN LAKE TE ANAU REGION. IRREPARABLE HARM PROBABLE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. Two Wairarapa men, Messrs. A. and K. Sutherland, have just concluded a remarkably successful wapiti stalking expedition in the Lake Te Anau district, Mr. A. Sutherland bagging three on the northern arm of Lake Te Anau and his brother one on the middle arm. While Mr. A. Sutherland speaks in the most glowing terms of wapiti in the block he worked, his brother made a disquieting discovery concerning herds on the middle arm, which he found wera crossing with red deer, and he was of the opinion that unless they were culled out irreparable harm would be done. “In that block,” Mr. Sutherland added, “I found that all the wapiti are crossing with red deer and out of 25 I saw and one that I shot a bull and a cow were the only pure types. There is a serious danger of the herd being ruined. The crossbred is a very miserable animal. Its body is as big as the wapiti, but it has a very poor head.”
