Many of the hntry fees for the Christchurch Competitions Society’s annual festival in May, which have been received by the secretary, Mr. T. F. Hall, are in the form of stamps. Sheets of penny stamps,, and some twopenny stamps, fill a pigeon-hole in his desk. Mr. Hall was unable to say whether those who enter for the competitions do not appreciate the convenience of postal notes, or whether they have discovered that the stamps cost a little less? “It’s just like being in Willis Street during the day up there,’’ commented the Hon. W. H. Mclntyre, chairman of tire Nelson Education Board, at a recent meeting when a request for -a. school at Maggie Creek in the Howard goldfields was under discussion. He said there was quite a large permanent settlement there at present, and some of the miners were doing very well. Men were there from Auckland, Wellington and other' districts, and they said they would never go back to city life.
