WANGANUI ROADS

HIGHWAY NOW PASSABLE. NEW RIVER ROUTE. Wanganui, April 1. In fine weather it is now possible for motorists to make the journey over the Bulls-Turakina Road, which became blocked as the result of r?in affecting contracting work last week. There is a single car track over Dalvey Hill, but it will not be passable in wet weather, and motorists are still being advised by the automobile associations to detour through Marton. In a very short time the Public Works Department will cease activity on the Wanganui River Road ai'fl ahe length from the city to Pipiriki will be handed over to the Wanganui County Council to maintain. There is now an all-metal route from Wanganui, via Pipiriki, to Raetihi. Metalling of the remaining gaps was completed last week. At present the surface beyond the. Ruapirau Bridge is very rough, and it is not advisable for ’ motorists to use the route until the road has had a fair chance of settling. ' Great improvements have been effected to the Wanganui-Raetihi' road by the utilisation of relief labour under the direction of the Public Works Department. It is reported that this route is now in a much better state than it was a few months ago. A great deal still remains to be done at the Makirikiri end, however.
