DEFEAT OF GOLDEN WINGS SILVER SCORN ALSO FAILS. QUEEN HELEN’S HANDSOME WIN.

By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 9.5 p.m. Sydney, April 2. The autumn meeting of the Australian Jockey Club was continued at Randwick to-day in fine weather. The attendance was 53,000—the best for many years. The track was slow but in good order. Golden Wings on the strength of his excellent showing in the Doncaster Handicap was warmly supported in the La Perouse Handicap but failed to flatter his supporters at any stage of the race. He finished in the rear of the field.

I New Zealand were compensated in the next race when the Chief Ruler filly Queen Helen produced a brilliant finishing effort to capture the Easter Plate from Arachne, who performed well. Silver Scorn ran prominently in the Sydney Cup until a furlong from home. Peter Jackson was responsible for a most inglorious display. Jockey Ellis said after the race that Peter Jackson was never on the bit and pulled up slightly lame.

LA PEROUSE HANDICAP. WHITTINGHAM, 8.1 (McCarten) 1 VISTA, 8.4 (Britt) 2 PERSIAN, 7.6 (O’Sullivan) 3 Ten started, including Golden Wings. Some Boy was the early pacemaker from Vista, Questionnaire and Persian. Vista was first to make the turn, closely pressed by Some Boy, Emily Rose and Whittingham. Eleven started. Misnomer was smartest away and carried the field along at a merry pace from Arachne, Rondeau, Queen Helen and Mangelo. Turning for home Misnomer and Arachne were together from Rondeau and Queen Helen. At the distance Arachne shot out and appeared to have the race in keeping, but Queen Helen, vigorously ridden by Munro, overhauled the leader a few strides from the post and secured the verdict by half a length. Time, lm 28s. BIRAGANBIL HANDICAP. MAFOOTA, 7.3 (Britt) 1 AUSTRALIA FAIR, 9.0 (Cook) 2 MONTEGO, 7.8 (Carter) 3 Thirteen started. Fleet took charge after the barrier rise and led for a furlong from Musician, Kagal and Australia Fair. . Passing the half mile Mafoota showed the way to Fleet, Australia Fair and Dromos. Maintaining the advantage Mafoota went on to win comfortably by two lengths. Time, lm 39Js. WENTWORTH HANDICAP. ' • First Division. TURBULENT, 7.6 (Britt) 1 CONTACT, 7.9 (O’Sullivan) 2 BOMBUS, 9.4 (Munro) 3 Thirteen started. Bombus commenced smartly and when the field settled down had command from Robber, Gladswood, Merrie Miller and Contact. Bombus had charge at the distance but was unable to withstand a determined challenge by Turbulent, who was closely pressed by Contact. Turbulent finished best to gain the victory by a length and a half. Time, lm 14Js. SYDNEY CUP.

BROAD ARR0W,,7.1 (Britt) ... 1 GIPPSLAND, 7.3 (Knox) 2 LIMARCH, 8.3 (Bartie) 3 Fourteen started. When the field. settled down Oro was tire pacemaker from Broad Arrow, First Balloon, .sßlixten, Silver Scorn and Peter Jackson. Out of the straight Oro was a length clear of Silver Scorn, Broad Arrow, Limarch, Miss Nottava and Peter Jackson. Along the back Oro held command, closely pressed by Silver Scorn, Roxburgh, Peter Jackson and Broad Arrow. Making the home turn Silver Scorn joined Oro, with Broad Arrow in close attendance. When straightened for home 'diver Scorn momentarily assumed control but was immediately challenged by Broad Arrow, ( who shot out, gave nothing a chance and won with ease by three lengths. Time, 3m 28s. WENTWORTH HANDICAP. Second Division. THEO, 8.5 (McCarten) 1 THE RAIDER, 7.10 (Knox) 2 TRICK, 7.4 (Simpson) 3 Eleven started. Trick was first to show out from Rossinver, Paragon and The Raider. Racing to the turn Trick showed the way to Paragon, The Raider and Theo. Passing the Leger The Raider held command with Theo moving up fast. Going on Theo reached the judge with two lengths’ advantage. Time, lm 14js.

TOCAL HANDICAP. MR. KERRY, 7.12 (Pratt) 1 TINGALBA, 9.0 (Shelton) “ RIVALLI, 7.11 (Maxwell) 3 Fifteen started. Myarin raced away at the barrier rise and led to the turn from Tingalba, Mr. Kerry and Deputy Ruler. When straightened for home Mr. Kerry smartly ran to the front and maintained the advantage to win with ease by three lengths. Time, 2m 5Js.
