VIEWS ON CURRENT TOPICS SYSTEM OF GRADING CHEESE. “APPARENTLY ONLY A FARCE.”'

. (To the Editor.) ’ ; Sir,—The mformation published last Thursday'relative to cheese grading conducted by. the Wairarypa A.'and P. Association gives dairymen food', for thought, ‘ and, confirms many of us have thought for years—that grading ta a farce. Thy VM? crepancy in position given by. thy respective judges certainly dtebredits the value of so-cMled' expert opinion, and leads one to the conclusion that'judging must be done under the “rules of Raf-fc'-'ty-”' ".'. ■ ■■■ ■'■ ' ' . h

I am convinced that w.e have yet to get the proper judges fo grade, bur cheese. These are the people who eat it, and it ta they who have the final say as to what ta a good or a ba<i article. It ta remarkable that a company, judge in London should place the' Lowgarth coloured cheese first while the Dairy Division expert placed it eleventh. In the case of Greytbwn there ta a discrepancy, of the reverse order, the company expert placing it yleyerith and the D.airy. Diytaipii fourth'. In the Greytown white there is a similar discrepancy. Another anomaly' ta'that the i 'Elmdale white cheese placed first by? the show judge, at Cartyrtqn and the Dairy Division '-af Wellington,, and secph*d by the Daity Division ' at * London,/shpuM on^y be' considered eighfo' By the company expert at London.' ’ _ . ‘ , . The table published ta foil of similar > anopialies, arid it riiakes one dptibt the efficacy of grading. ' In' only four cases is there anything approaching foianimity among" thy' fouf judges,'"and -'here we are'in-New Zealand spending thousands of pounds on a' grading whicli is supposed to be producing‘results. It is certainly time a thorough investigation was made, arid some assurance given that grading is a' reliable system" arid' a' proper indication to our cheese-makyrs.— 1 am, etc., FARMER. Whenuakura, April 2.

WHO IS TO BLAME? (To the Editor.) " Sir,—Like many more of your readers I would like .'to know why there Is tfos sudden cry of quotas. If < I remember riglitly it ta not so long ago that political leaders scoured the country urging the. farmers' fo produce more arid still mprq. Npw we find foese same meh Scared to death about Old Bogyy Quota. Syme say the farmet 1$ fo bljme for' Buying too much foreign machinery. Maybe that is so. but why not put the b.lafoe on to this Government of ours for ,ript imppsfog a nigh tariff on a|’i these foreign' goods. Unfdrtunatety it did' not have the courage “to do 'foch a thing, because too many big impqrtfog combines have our alleged farmer friends under their thumbs. When foe dairy farmers and others realise that old Jofoi Bull wants'our produce, and'foe byst at that,, it’s up to us fo be on side wyfo him, and make our motto: “Buy onty Brittah-mady goods.” Let Mr. Foreigner go and gather brimstone.—l am, etc., E. JOHNSTON; Mokoia, April 2.
