DEATH OF SIR JOSIAH SYMON. BRILLIANT AUSTRALIAN’S LIFE. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Adelaide, March 31. The death of Sir Josiah Symon, who was ope of the framers of the Federal Constitution and a member of the first Commonwealth Senate, has occurred at the age of 87. The Hon. Sir Josiah Symon was bom in 1846 at Wick, Scotland, and educated at the Stirling High School, of which he was dux in 1862. He became a recognised leader of the bar in South Australia, and held office as president of the South Australian Law Society. He was member of the House of Assembly for Sturt, Sopth Australia, from 1881 to 1887, and Attorney-General in 1881, and again in 1904-05. From 1901 to 1904 he was leader of the Opposition in the Senate. He published studies in poetry, speeches, and lectures, particularly on federation, and he possessed one of the finest, libraries in South Australia, which he proposed to give to the . South Australian Public Library, haying already presented a portion of his law library to tthe Adelaide University. He owned a notable art collection, including autographed photographs of eminent British statesmen with whom he conferred personally on federation in 1899.
