CARVED ARCHWAY

STRUCTURE At ROTORUA. EXAMPLE dFMAORi ART. Rotorua, March 30. The erection of ah archway at the entrance to the bridge over the PUarenga stream at Whakarewatewa was finished yesterday. The structure consists of two posts of Carved totafS, Which Wete specially selected, being lift. by 24ih. by Bin. There are two Cross pidceS of totara carved in a tracery design, while the carving on the .posts consists bf ngfiUes and Maori designs, Which Sffe a f§pr&* duction of the carvings bf the dlabn times. The work Was executed at the Rotorua Maori Arts and Crafts school, and is a splendid example bf the Maori carvers’ art. The word "flieSHSl* is carved on one Side of the. cross pieces and “Haepera” on the other Side. The reading at the other end of the bridge leads to, the native village and the Government reserve.
