WALLA WALLA’S DEBUT
' ADDINGTON’S BIG EVENT
BED SHADOW DOMINION’S HOPE.
INTEREST IN TO-DAY’S RACE.
(By
“Hurry On.”)
ITie “star” event at the Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington today will be the first appearance in New Zealand of the Australian champion Walla Walla. The visitor has done extremely well since his arrival ih the Dominion, and in his trials has shown that his reputation for pace was not without foundation. He has a record of 2m. 2 2-ss. for a mile in Australia, and his owner-trainer is confident that the ehampion can do two minutes or even better.' Against this champion from across the Tasman New Zealand is pitting four great pacers — Red Shadow, Harold Logan, Roi I’Or and Jewel Pointer. All are proved pacers, and each has an impressive record, but the hopes of New Zealand are mostly resting with Red Shadow. ■There is no more astute man in the game than his veteran trainer and driver J. (“Scotty”) Bryce. He has expressed his full confidence in the ability of his charge, and he is not one of those who run away with the idea that all their ducks are - swans. Bryce is a hardheaded Scot whose judgment has been proved on many occasions, fled Shadow reeled off a mile on the track at Addington last Saturday in 2m. 3 4-55., and it is considered that he was not quite tuned up at the time and that he will do even better to-day. . . Addington track watchers are of the opinion that Walla Walla is the best ever seen out there, and his credentials are certainly the best of those engaged, but there are many whose experience of Bryce will give them confidence that the Australian speedster is not going to have things all his own way.
