FIRE RAZES OKATO HOUSE
CHILD GIVES WARNING COUGH. HURRIED ESCAPE OF OCCUPANTS. Fire totally destroyed a six-roomed wooden house on Dover Road, Okato, yesterday morning, and the occupants, Mr. P. N. Corbett and his family, made a hurried escape in their night clothes. Mrs. Corbett was in hospital and the eldest daughter was keeping house for her father and three small children. The coughing of one of his children about 2.30 a.m. awoke Mr. Corbett. Such a hold did the flames have by that time that he had to take the children from the house through the window. In a short time the place was burned to the ground, neither furniture nor personal effects being saved. There was no water supply with which to fight the fire. The reason for the outbreak is a mystery, it being stated that all fires were out before the family retired. The house belonged to the estate of the late Mr. A. Corbett. The dwelling and outbuildings were insured with the Phoenix Office for £4OO and the furniture with the South British for about £250. <
