LEAGUE ATHLETIC MEETING

V: t ' CONCLUSION OF SEASON’S SERIES. RACING HELD AT WESTERN PARK. Last evening saw the conclusion of the weekly evening sports meetings which have been conducted by the New Plymouth Cycle and Athletic League at Western Park during the summer. Seven rycling events were decided. The A grade two-mile handicap resulted in a good win for A. E. Wood, and W. Ireland scored in the B grade race. C. Neighbour won his first handicap race in the C grade competition and W. Jury was the successful messenger boy. The A grade scratch race was won by C. Parker after a good finish with J. Foote. Officials were: Handicapper and referee, Mr. L. E. Smith; starter, Mr. D. George; marskman, Mr. J. Norris; judges, Messrs. F. E. Orbell,,.W. Yardley and R. W. Browne; lap steward, Mr. J. Remington; secretary and time-keeper, Mr. H. W. Bocock; number steward, Mr. A. Gable.

Results in detail are:— . A grade two-mile cycle handicap: A. E. Wood (240) 1, G. Plucke (180) 2, Doug. George (240) 3. Nine started. The three placed riders and Eva were the leaders throughout and, combining well, gave the back-markers no chance of making up their handicap. Wood beat Plucke by a clear length, with George close up third just ahead of H. Eva. Time, 4m 555. B grade two-mile cycle-handicap: W. Ireland (10) 1, G. Stevens (scr) 2, D. Newell (20) 3. Four started. The field was bunched after the first lap with Pulford the early pace-maker. Riding with improved judgment Ireland staved off a strong challenge from Stevens in the final lap and scored by half a length. Newall was a little over a length away third just ahead of C. Pulford. Time, 5m 48 l-ss. _ C grade one-mile cycle handicap. L. Neighbour (scr) 1, T. Knight (60) 2, N. Knight (10) 3. Six started. Neighbour earlv caught the leaders and went away to win well by 20 yards from T. Knight, who beat N. Knight by two lengths for second place. Time 2m 44 l-ss. Messenger boys half-mile cycle. _ V. Jury (25) 1, A. Booker (80) 2 D. (30) 3 Five started. Jury headed the limit rider, Booker, in the straight and won by a length and a half. Inches separated Booker and Knight. Time, Im 20 l-ss. , . j * A grade mile and a half miss and out scratch race: C. Parker 1, J. Foote 2, L. Stevens 3. Eight started. B. Sole G. Plucke, H. Eva, A. Wood and C. Lehrke were called off in that order and left ffie three placed men to fight out the finish. Parker crossed the line two lengths ahea of Foote, with Stevens a similar distance away third. Time, 3m 40s- . B grade one and a half mile points scratch race: W. Ireland and G. Stevens 4 points each equal 1, C. Pulford 3. Four started. Time, 4m ss. „ C grade half-mile scratch race: C.
