Anderson 2 wins, Melville 2 wins, A. E. Anderson 2 wins, Libeau 2 wins, Taylor 0 wins. Leads: Jones 5 wins, Palmer 3 wins, Espiner 3 wins, Mills 3 wins, Malone 3 wins, O’Neill 2 wins, Honore 2 wins, Law 2 wins, Guy 2 wins, Kehely 1 win. NEW TELEGRAPH CHARGES. CRITICISM AT ELTHAM. The new scale of telegraphic charges does not appeal to residents of small towns and instead of being regarded as a concession it is considered to be more in the nature of an imposition, in the opinion expressed by business people of Eltham yesterday. It was pointed out that most of the telegrams were for places outside the town and chiefly at a long distance. The concessions affected only such telegrams as were sent within Taranaki and the revised rates must be considered to be a distinct, disadvantage to country business centres. Business houses consider their telegraphic bills will be increased rather than decreased and while the purely local charge of 6d might be an advantage to a big town it is not thought to be so to country towns. KAPONGA PLUNKET SOCIETY. GARDEN PARTY TO ASSIST FUNDS. The Kaponga branch of the Plunket Society held a garden party on Friday afternoon in the grounds of Mrs. A. W. Anderson, Kuri Street. There was a very good attendance and £2 2s 6d profit was made for the society’s funds. A French croquet competition was won by Mrs. I. E. Evans and a hurry-scurry by Mesdames Hessell and Lewis. Mrs. W. McCullough won a lawn ping-pong competition. The society’s president, Mrs. E. B. Tait, thanked the hostess, Mrs. A. W. Anderson, for the use of the grounds. Mrs. Tait also presented the trophies to the winners.
