MUNICIPAL BAND YEAR

COMMITTEE’S ANNUAL REPORT. NEED FOR NEW EQUIPMENT. A successful year’s working which resulted in a profit and the annexation of the B grade championship are features reviewed in the annual report of the Stratford Municipal Band, to be presented at a meeting to-night. The ladies’ committee has been an assistance, states the report, in the way it worked to make social events a success. There were also residents outside the committee who rendered assistance when the secretary had less time to devote to the work. The balance-sheet shows a credit of £B5 Is 6d, a gratifying result after paying £3O in bonuses from the funds.

The band rendered public programmes on a number of occasions at the park and the town hall and would have played in the town regularly on Saturday nights except for the difficulty of securing time off for members. The band was engaged by the Stratford Racing Club and the A. and P. Association. Instruments and uniforms are becoming worse for wear, states the report, and consideration will have to be given to the purchase of new equipment. The instruments have been in use for 15 years and the uniforms about eight years. A complaint has been received about the numbers of bandsmen appearing at public events without uniform and with a ragged appearance. The band under its conductor (Mr. H. McCaskill) at the Manaia contest won all events in the B grade. SCHOOL COMMITTEE MATTERS. EDUCATION DIRECTOR’S VISIT. The secretary was instructed to write to the board’s architect asking particulars of concrete and asphalt work and the relative costs. It was pointed out that it was not intended to lay the whole of the area in front of the school in durable material, but part of the area in lawns and shrubs.
