SPORTS HELD AT MIDHIRST

BRIGHT ANNUAL MEETING. CYCLING, RUNNING, CHOPPING. As befits a meeting that ranks among the best in Taranaki, the annual sports at Midhirst yesterday easily upheld the standard of recent years in providing a wide range of running, cycling and chopping events that were characterised by large fields and good finishes without exception. The weather was perfect and the track was in good order, so that most events returned fast times and enabled the public to see the competitors giving their best performances. The chopping was conducted in a special area set aside for it at one end of the ground. These raised banks gave everyone a clear view of all the entrants. The chops were placed between track events and as a result there was something to’ watch all the time. A loud speaker installation announced the results and features of interest or relayed music,, while a merry-go-round kept the children amused. It is notable that though it was the first chop of the season- and handicapping was therefore difficult, Mr. J. Graham had the entrants so well timed that the prize money was very evenly distributed. The handicapping of the other events was also good. The machinery shop attached to the dairy factory was converted into a refreshment room, where a committee of ladies catered. The attendance was practically, the same as last year and the gate yielded £3l 10s.

A very well patronised dance, for which the Ambassadors played, was held at night Details are:— Running and Cycling. 100 yards open:—First heat: A. Mcßoberts (6yds) 1, W. A. Aubrey (9yds) 2, C.
