PERSONAL

Mr. and Mrs. A. Payne, Puniho, left Auckland yesterday on the Monowai on a holiday visit to Australia. A motion of sympathy with relatives of the late Mr. J. S. Connett, a vicepresident of the club, was passed at the annual meeting of the Taranaki Alpine Club last night. The death has occurred at Christchurch of Mr. George C. Smith, aged 79. For many years he was in business at Christchurch as a wine and spirit merchant and retired only a few years ago. Mr. Smith took a very keen interest in the volunteer movement and was also a prominent Christchurch bowler and a justice of the peace. He is survived by his wife and three children. Mrs. W. R. Adams, New Plymouth, is a daughter.
