WINNER OF £2000 PRIZE
MRS. P. BROPHY, PUNGAREHU LATE RECOGNITION OF NUMBER. WELL-KNOWN COASTAL FAMILY. So modest about it that she would not be persuaded to speak to a reporter over the telephone, Mrs. Patrick Brophy, Main Road, Pungarehu, was discovered yesterday as the winner of the £2OOO first prize in the Golden Chance art union drawn at Wellington on Wednesday. A daughter of Mrs. Brophy answered a toll call yesterday morning. No, her mother could not speak to a reporter, she said. Fuidher questions elicited the information that Mrs. Brophy was not at all excited about her win. “And has she found her ticket?” asked the reporter. “Oh, yes,” was the reply. “As a matter of fact, mother was at New Plymouth yesterday with the ticket In her purse, but she did not know she had won the prize until she arrived home last night. “It was at tea-time that we heard the winning number announced over the radio. ‘I think that’s my ticket,’ said mother, and she went to get her purse. Sure enough, she had the right number.” This was Mrs. Brophy’s first prizewinning in an art union, and, naturally, she was pleased, in a calm, moderate way. Her husband, who is chairman of directors of the Pungarehu Co-operative Dairy Company, told a reporter last night that the use of the pen-name “Australia” was just a sudden inspiration on the part of Mrs. Brophy. It did not even mean that she intended to take a trip to Australia, he said. The ticket had been purchased from Miss G. Williams at New Plymouth some time ago. Mr. Brophy visited New Plymouth yesterday morning with the object, it is understood, of arranging for the redemption of the prize-money.
