IMPROVEMENT IN RUGBY

LATE TACKLING AND TIGHT PLAY. REFEREES IN SOUTH TARANAKI. The desirability of brightening up Rugby was stressed at the annual meeting of the South Taranaki Referees Association on Wednesday. Mr. A. H. Guy urged referees to rule strictly on cases of players holding the ball in a scrummage, and tackling other players after they were rid of the ball. Other speakers said club coaches could do much to assist. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr. A. E. Spratt; vice-presi-dent, Mr. G. Hurley; secretary, Mr. J. Goodwin; appointment board, Messrs. Goodwin, L. H. Clapham and A. H. Guy; committee, Messrs. A. E. Stevens, P. Rangi, P. Clements, L. Wells and W. Canning; examination committee, Messrs. Hurley and Goodwin; delegates to Taranaki association; Messrs. Spratt and Hurley.

OKAIAWA DEFEATS MATAPU. EGMONT TENNIS COMPETITION. Okaiawa Gold tennis team defeated Matapu by 18 sets to 6 in an Egmont Tennis Association match played at Okaiawa on Saturday. 82 NEW ROAD SIGNPOSTS.

HAWERA TO TARIKI ADDITIONS.

The South Taranaki Automobile Association has just completed the erection of 82 modem signposts on the mam road between Hawera and Tariki. This is the opening of an intensive campaign of signposting to be conducted by the association. There are now nearly 200 signposts on the road between Hawera and Tariki. Every road is named, direction given to every locality and where necessary mileages of importance shown. The Main Highways Board recently drew up specifications for signposts and these have been followed by the new South Taranaki erections. All bad bends and dangerous crossings are clearly indicated and there is no better signposting m New Zealand. The work should prove very useful to motorists, particularly those from other districts.

PERSONAL ITEMS. Mrs. H. H. Chadwick, an early South Taranaki resident, died at Patea yesterday aged 69 years, most of which had been spent in the district. She was bom at Wangaratta (Victoria) and came with her parents as a child of nine to Whenuakura. She was one of the first PUPu S at the Whenuakura school. Mrs. Lhacwick was married at Patea and lured, first at Auckland and later at Stratford, Manaia and Hawera, where she spent about 40 years. Mrs. Chadwick was a keen supporter of the home industries section at all the district shows, and at Palmerston North and Wanganui, and had often won points prizes in cooking at the Egmont and winter shows. She is survived by a family of nine, four daughters, Mesdames A. Wan (Opunake), P. A. Bourke (Whenuakura), Lash (Dannevirke) and J. H. Horton (Hawera) and five sons, Messrs. Leo and Fred (Hawera), Hector (Feilding), Norman (Taihape) and Harry (Wellington). Her husband predeceased her by 11 years. There is one brother, Mr. G. Johnson, in Wellington, and two sisters, Mrs. H. Hughes (Sydney) and Mrs. P. Hurley (Western Australia). Mr. W. Howard, Wanganui, has accepted a position on the staff of Messrs. George and Doughty’s Hawera branch.

HAWERA OPERA HOUSE. “THE SONG OF SONGS” COMING. “Bombay Mail” will be shown finally to-night at the Hawera Opera House. “The Song of Songs,” which will be shown at the matinee to-morrow and for two nights, directed by Rouben Mamoulian, is the first Marlene Dietrich ■film which has not been directed by her discoverer, Josef von Sternberg. An outstanding cast of actors appears in support of the star, who recently has commanded the attention of the world as the sponsor of the trousers for women style vogue. Brian Aheme, referred to by drama critics as the most romantic actor of the New York stage, makes his stage debut as Miss Dietrich’s leading man. Lionel Atwill, who has been an American stage star for 16 years, appears as her husband. Alison Skipworth, Hardie Albright and Helen Freeman, also have good roles. A special attraction to-morrow night will be the appearance of the haka team from the Happiness Revue Company, and progress results in the carnival will be announced. “Love, Honour and Oh, Baby!” will be shown at the Grand Theatre matinee to-morrow.
