UNDERTAKING BY AUSTRIA

PROTOCOL OF 1922 RECALLED.

EFFECT OF TREATY AT ROME.

(British Official Wireless.)

Rec. 5.5 p,m. Rugby, March 19. The signature at Rome of the political and economic protocols between Italy, Austria and Hungary was referred to in the House of Commons to-day, when a question was asked regarding their bearing on the undertaking given by Austria in the 1922 protocol not to alienate its independence and to abstain from any negotiations and from any engagement calculated directly or indirectly to compromise its independence. Sir John Simon, Foreign Minister, in reply said he had not yet received the full text of the protocol, but so far as he was at present aware it did not conflict with the undertaking given by Austria in the 1922 protocol.
