SMITH’S ROYAL “TROT”

MORE SUCCESSES AT WANGANUI. WORTHY LIGHT’S VICTORY. Special to News.) The Auckland trainer F. J. Smith continued his royal “trot” when he landed three winners at Wanganui on Saturday, ■ and it is quite on the cards that the exj-English reinsman will do well on the second day of the meeting. Prior to the fixture Smith had driven 98 winners in New Zealand, so that when he steered Worthy Light and Anita Fame home it saw him hoist the century. Another very interesting feature was that when Donum won it made the 20th. win for Smith’ with horses at the first time of asking by him. With form exposed last Saturday the public should be able to get well within the mark on the second day. It will be difficult to find anything to head off the bold little Worthy Light, who put up ihe fine run of 4m. 31 l-ss. to win the Wanganui Handicap. Worthy Light has now won at all distances, and his record in his last nine starts stands at seven wins and two thirds. The four-year-old has been only twice out of the money, being unplaced at Auckland last June at his first two starts, when inexperience and a heavy track hampered him.

Smooger, who won the big race last year, narrowly defeating Smith’s charge Raider, again proved himself a really solid pacer and it was bad luck for Sam Smith to find his namesake this year producing one of the calibre of Worthy Light. Considering that he is asked to race at both gaits, Smooger is something of a wonder, and there is no telling to what heights he may yet attain at either, or both, sections. He will improve with racing and he can be expected to land a stake soon.

Anita Fame’s Good Work. Anita Fame, daughter of the one-time Auckland crack sprinter Nelson Fame, proved equal to the task of silencing the opposition in the East'brook Handicap and, started a second time, she ran a fine race to be second to Lord Wrack, who is a very solid young pacer. Anita Fame may be dangerous in the mile heat on Saturday, but she will not have everything her own way as both Lord Wrack and Guymond should go sound races. The last-named should be improved with racing and may not be long in winning a race.

Leo Berkett, who is always a popular figure at Wanganui and Taranaki meetings, had a very consistent day, and while he succeeded in capturing only one winning certificate he was in the small money all day, gaining places with Tasman Flight (twice), Guymond, Fleet Arrow and Nelson Chum. His winning shot was Wrackless, who will soon win again. Berkett’s team is of the versatile order' as Tasman Flight has won races on the West Coast as a trotter, and Wrackless is entered at Hawera at the pacing gate, while Fleet Arrow is set to tackle the trotters at Easter. Harry Garnett produced, a surprise packet in Supertax, and although he beat the favourite to do so the fans would appreciate Garnett’s win. The Ashhurst trainer lias always been a good patron of the Wanganui meeting, and with Great Delight, Rangihau and many others he has often been in the picture. Garnett is a pastmaster at preparing old horses, particularly if they suffer with foot trouble, and many an old stager has been rejuvenated at Wanganui by having their “corns” removed, either by Garnett or under his supervision. L. O. Thomas, as expected, broke the ice with his pacer Flintlock, half-

brother to the speedy Brent Zolock, and in his present class Flintlock may win again, although he does not look like reaching the standard of his relative. Ces. Donald has Wahnooka in the right order to win races and the'.Peterwah trotter should go on to further successes. Two miles races suit him and he should soon be'on deck, again. Florrie Real appears to be coming right and should win in her turn. After her displays last season, which were promising, the writer at a loss to know why Florrie was neglected in her first attempt on Saturday last. WANGANUI TROTTING CLUB. ACCEPTANCES FOR SATURDAY.
