Tilden said that he and Vines would issue a challenge to Perry and Crawford to meet them in singles matches this season and thus settle the world’s supremacy. They would play Perry and Crawford on any of four conditions—with no admission charged, with paid admission and the receipts to go to charity, for a side bet of 5000 dollars each, or for no money at all. Both professionals stated that they had been, forced into challenging by the decision of the International Federation not to permit open tournaments. >
