LUNCH ON PORT CHALMERS

MAIDEN VOYAGE TO DOMINION. BUSINESS MEN ENTERTAINED. To celebrate the arrival at New Plymouth of the Port Chalmers, the latest unit of the C. and D. Line, on her maiden voyage to New Zealand a number of business men and representative citizens were the guests of Captain S. W. Hayter at luncheon on board the ship yesterday. A very brief toast list was honoured. Mr. J. R. Cruickshank, representing Messrs. Collett and Co., agents for the shipping company, welcomed the visitors on behalf of the company. The toast ,of the “Port Chalmers” was proposed by Mr. S. G. Smith, M.P., who referred to the fact that the Port Chalmers was the first ship to be built specially for the New Zealand chilled beef trade. Captain Hayter appropriately responded. The toast of “The Agents” , was proposed by Mr. J. Brown, chairman of the Taranaki Producers’ Freezing Works, and responded to by Messrs.. Cruickshank and A. L. Humphries. The visitors subsequently'inspected the ship, and took considerable interest in the provision made for chilling beef in carbonic acid gas. The passenger. accommodation was also the subject of favourable comment. Last night the captain and officers were hosts at a small but enjoyable dance on J board-
