REDISTRIBUTION NEEDED

USE OF RACING PERMITS.

TOO MANY SMALL GATHERINGS.

(By

“Hurry On.”)

The - depression has had one effect on racing that may in the long run prove beneficial. It has shown very conclu-. sively that many clubs have totalisator permits that should never have been allotted, or should have been redistributed years ago. Certain flourishing districts are starved for racing days while others have a superfluity that they have no chance of using profitably. One of the shinmg examples is Te Aroha. This progressive club has only two days, while many others which give only a third of the stakes have four and six days. Another instance is Stratfofd. This club has a’ splendidly equipped course but only two days’ racing. The conference has'given ,it another, but it is unable to use it as the suggested dates clash with a' couple' of small gatherings elsewhere. This is not an isolated example; there, are plenty of useless meetings all over the country, and they are holding back the sport. The stakes are so small that even should an owner win a race he can scarcely show a profit. Under circum--stances such as these it is not surprising that the racing is not free from suspicion at times. It is high time that the powers that be faced this question. It .is a big problem and one that requires to be tackled by men of ability and courage, but sooner or later it must be dealt with, and the sooner the better if the sport is to be placed on a firm basis.
