BEAUTIFYING PROPOSALS
McLEAN STREET, FITZROY, SCHEME MATTER TO BE CONSIDERED SOON. A scheme for beautifying McLean Street, Fitzroy, has been recently prepared and will be considered at an early date by the New Plymouth Borough Council. The council will, it is understood, receive full co-operation from the residents of the street, should the scheme be carried out. A rise in the street at the Nob’s Line .end will be levelled, it is proposed, and an even grade made from Beach Street to Nob’s Line. In the middle of the street a roadway 24 feet-wide is planned. This roadway would be kerbed on both sides, leaving footpaths 21ft wide. Eleven feet of each footpath it is proposed to sow in grass. The question whether flowers, shrubs or trees will be planted in plots in the grass will be discussed by the residents of the street and their decision will be submitted to the borough council. The placing of the kerbings between the grass and the road is considered to be better than putting them between the grass and the footpaths, as has been done in several other streets. By the new arrangement, vehicles will be kept off the grass, the. surface and appearance of which will thereby be preserved.
Residents of the street were interesting themselves in the scheme, a News reporter was informed yesterday, and it was anticipated that each one -would keep his frontage tidy. The scheme will connect with the Nob’s Line beautifying work, which is at present under construction.
