CONTROL OF UNEMPLOYMENT

COMPLAINT AGAINST THE BOARD. FORCING COMMITTEES TO RESIGN. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Feb. 8. In a statement to-day Mr. McLaughlin, national secretary of the National Union of Unemployed, complains of the Unemployment Board compelling many committees to resign owing to their lack of co-operation, and says that it seems determined to put the local committees out of business and to vest control in the hands of the Commissioner of Unemployment at Wellington. In 1931, he says, Parliament clearly saw that four men, largely domiciled in Wellington, could not possibly administer the unemployment fund according to the varying needs and conditions of every area without the co-operation of district committees.

“The solution to the present trouble,” he says “lies in a complete change of policy by the board, and this can be secured by unemployment committees functioning as intended by the legislation which established them.”
