Hard hit by competition from synthetic gums, the kauri gum industry of New Zealand has languished to such an extent that it is now almost a thing of the past. For some time the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research has interested itself in the t welfare of this industry by directing its efforts to elaboration of processes which will yield a product satisfactory to the overseas consumer. To Dr. J. R- Hoskmg, of the Dominion laboratory, this particular task was entrusted, and as a result of his investigations he has evolved a method for purifying and standardising crude kauri gum. Highly favourable reports have been received from abroad on the article obtained by Dr. ■ Hosking’s process, for which the Government, has taken out patent rights. The authorities are hopeful' fhaf its use on a commercial scale will briiig about successful rehabilitation of the industry.
