NEW PLYMOUTH TRACK

FINAL TRIALS ON COURSE STAR ARTIST IMPRESSIVE. ALL HUMBUG AND DESERT STAR. The rain on Monday night left the New Plymouth tracks in splendid ordeifor the final trials yesterday morning. The outside of the course proper, with the flags well out, was available for fast work and nearly all the visiting horses were seen in action. R. Barlow was first on the scene, but he did not set his team any exacting tasks, Silk Sox, Merry Way, Tahurangi, Headmistress and Aussie Ra all being allotted steady pace work on the inside. Silk Sox looked very fit and strode out in good style. The Flying candidate Star Artist cantered round and ran home from the three furlong post in 395., without being extended. She appears in great order and did her task in a pleasing fashion. Royal Artist was sent seven furlongs, the last five taking lm. 7s. This was the best time recorded over this distance for the morning and Royal Artist shaped well. He has not shown any form for some time but he looks well enough. Riotous was allowed to stride once round at a solid three-quarter pace. No fault can be found with his condition. It was expected that Fiji would gallop but he was restricted to solid half-pace work on the inside. He is not looking as big as he was at Hawera. Senegal beat Vertigern over seven furlongs, the last five being run in lm. 7 2-ss. Both shaped well, the veteran Vertigern looking particularly bright. Blacksmith pulled hard over two rounds of pace work on the inside and appeared to be a fit horse. Pomp covered half a mile in 535. He was eased up over the last 50yds. and could have improved on his time. Nevertheless it was a very good gallop. Esteem and Invictus were schooled over six hurdles the reverse way. Invictus gave a good display, while Esteem, though inclined to run his fences down, shaped satisfactorily for a novice. . All Spirit shaped well over half a mile in. 5215. He has improved considerably as a result of his racing at Hawera. Rust was not bustled to cover four furlongs in 545. She is a good filly. Royal Acre hit out in good style over a circuit at three-quarter pace. He appeared to relish the sting being out of the ground. Red Flush showed good pace for a hack when he galloped half a mile in 52|s. He failed to show up at Hawera but should do better at New Plymouth. Alloy and British Columbia cantered round to the three furlong peg and ran home in leisurely fashion in 41s. They are a fit pair. Another to appreciate the lack of sting in the ground was All Humbug, who hit out in pleasing fashion over five furlongs in lm. 7 l-55., which was a good gallop. Desert Star again showed in pleasing light by running half a mile in 52 3-ss. He hit out in determined style. Souchong did serviceable pace work on the inner. He hit out in bold fashion. Lebanon easily defeated Clembroney over half a mile in 53 3-ss. Clembroney was never going smoothly. t . Royal Routine jumped off at the seven furlong post , and ran , the first three in 38s. and the half-mile in 51s. He was stopping a little at the finish and took lm. 20s. for the full distance. It was a good effort. Prince Colossus, Matorni, Leo Colossus and Windscreen did pace work on the inner.

After breakfast the Woodville trainer, H. E. Russell, «made an appearance with Golden Wings and Red Rufus. Golden Wings, who seems in great heart, was allowed to stride once round on the inner grass. He moved in his usual bold fashion.

Red Rufus did two rounds at halfpace. He is a likely looking chestnut by Gainscourt. Arvada, with the assistance of Adept over the last five furlongs, covered seven furlongs in good style in lm. 33 2-ss, The last five took lm. 6 4-ss. and the pair finished on terms. Lady Kyra appeared to be going easily all the way to record 545. for half a mile. Lalla Quex was sent a mile alone. She ran the first three in 40 2-55., the five in lm. 7|s. and the full distance hi lm. 51 2-55., the last four furlongs taking 575. She was stopping at the finish, but it was a good gallop as the track was getting heavy and cut up at the time.
