FISH PROVE PLENTIFUL

TREVALLI CAUGHT IN THE HAND. IDEAL CONDITIONS AT WAVERLEY. Ideal conditions have prevailed at Waverley since the recent southerly storm and fishermen have not been slow to seize their opportunity. One caught eleven schnapper in one day, another nine and another six. Enthusiasts who have stayed up all night fishing in the light of the moon, which has been very clear, have been amply rewarded. Every child in the camp has caught herring and piper and cat-fish in plenty, and at least two stingarees have made their unwelcome appearance in the fishermen’s haul. Porpoises have been seen passing on several occasions and seagulls have screamed continually after shoals of kahawai. A large shark which was seen basking hurriedly when fired at with a pea rifle, under a cliff near the beach swam off Flounders and soles have been speared and netted in plenty. One party caught 100 flounders and soles in a very tom net in about two hours and this was followed by catches numbering 90 and 60 at a time. The two women who recently caught a schnapper in their hands must look to their laurels for two Waverley girls have since caught 33 trevalli in this way. Sunbathing on the beach, they were amazed to see a whole shoal of fish suddenly leap into the air and land on the beach. They proved to be trevalli which, had evidently been frightened by a shark. The girls managed to catch 33, which they took home in one of their towels. Patea Bowlers Defeated. Three rinks of Patea bowlers visited Waverley last Saturday and in glorious weather played excellent games with the Waverley members. The greens were very fast. Following are the results;— P. W. F. Drummond, McMillan, Walton, P. Bourke 32 — Nicholls, Hodgetts, Blackie, Wicks — 25 Lamb, Hammerton, J. Drummond, W. Grant 16 — Marriott, Jeffries, Mathieson, Mills ~ 31 Gilbert, Beer, Christensen, White 22 — How, Foley, Thomson, R. P. Palmer — 21 Totals 10 11
