HAWKE CUP RETAINED
VICTORY ON FIRST INNINGS RAIN PREVENTS COMPLETION. RANGITIKEI TEAM DEPARTS. PERFORMANCES. OF PLAYERS. A lead of 199 on the first innings ga ( ve Taranaki a decisive victory over Rangitikei, when owing to the heavy rain yesterday all possibility of completing the second innings in the Hawke Cup cricket match was abandoned. Rangitikei in the first innings made 112, to which Taranaki replied with 311. In the second innings Rangitikei had on Saturday night reached 224 for eight wickets when stumps were drawn. During the week-end members of the visiting team were taken to Mount Egmont. Visits were also made to Frethey’s Gardens, Brooklands and the Boys’ High School. Yesterday morning some of the visitors were taken to inspect the freezing works at Moturoa. During afternoon tea at Frethey’s Gardens on Sunday Mr. J. Brown spoke on behalf of the North Taranaki association and Mr. Thompson for the visitors. The latter made special reference to the management of the match and congratulated the association on this, which he said was more in keeping with the management of matches in the cities than with those among minor sociations.Before leaving yesterday the visitors were met by representatives of the management committee of the Northern Division and of the Taranaki Association, and again Mr. Thompson expressed appreciation of the hospitality extended to them, with special reference to the ladies who dispensed afternoon tea, and to Mr. W. Nicoll, who kept the score book for the visitors.
HAWKE CUP AVERAGES. TARANAKI PERFORMANCES. Averages of the Taranaki players in the Hawke Cup matches this season are as follow:—
Feilding. . A. Biggar has taken four catches, V. Parkinson arid N. Giddy two each, J. Birch, W. Dormer, C. Lash, S. Betts, J. Kirwin and T. Larkin one each, and J. Birch stumped one.
CRICKET AT RAILWAY RESERVE. NEW PLYMOUTH FRIENDLY GAME, tt — The New Plymouth Railway Cricket Club defeated a team selected by Mr. Tom Avery by seven runs at the Railway Reserve during the week-end. Railway scored 73 and 86 to which Avery’s team replied with 55 and 97. For Railway Carter, with 24 not out and 29, top-scored in both innings. Christian made 13 runs in the first innings and Roper 21 in the second. Stewart and Phillips, with 14 each and Wright with 10 not out were the only ones to reach double figures in Avery's first strike. In the second innings Phillips made a good stand for 44 while Stewart and Gilbert each made 13. Rutherford carried off the hat trick in Railway’s second innings. i Luncheon was served by the wives of several members of the Railway club.
