Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, member of Parliament for Waitomo, is staying at the Criterion Hotel, New Plymouth. Dr. Shaw, of the Health Department, has been visiting New Plymouth in connection with hospital board matters.
Mr. A. Oldham, Auckland, who has been visiting New Plymouth, returned north yesterday. Mr. Oldham resided at New Plymouth over 25 years ago.
Mr. P. W. Close has arrived at New York to take up his duties as South African Minister to the United States, states a cable.
The death of Mrs. R. M. Wright, aged 94, one of Canterbury’s oldest settlers, at Kaiapoi is reported in a Christchurch Press Association message. Mrs. Wright arrived with her father, Mr. J. Baker, in the ship Cressy in 1850. Sir Philip Cunliffe Lister, who was overtaken by illness at Nairobi, is making satisfactory progress, although it is uncertain when he will be able to’resume further engagements. The King has sent him a message of sympathy, says a British Official Wireless message. The King has approved the appointment of Lord Strathcona to be Parliamentary Under-Secretary of War in succession to Earl Stanhope, who was recently appointed Under-Secretary of Foreign Affairs, says a British Official Wireless message.
The Hon. A. E. Ransom, Minister of Lands, accompanied by Mr. W. Robertson, Under-Secretary of Lands and chairman of the Small Farms Board, will arrive at Te Kuiti on Tuesday next and will inspect several areas acquired by the Government for small farms, which are now in course of development. On the following day, in company with Mr. D. Bryant, Mr. Ransom will inspect a number of areas acquired by the Waikato Land Settlement Society for the settlement of the unemployed.
