CHILLED BEEF EXPORTS
SHIPMENT FROM AUCKLAND. LINER AVELONA STAR. Tire second consignment of chilled beef to be despatched from Auckland for London will be loaded on the Blue Star steamer Avelona Star, which will arrive at Auckland from Wellington on Monday morning. She is scheduled to sail for London, via Panama, on February 3. The Avelona Star will load a quantity of the chilled beef on Monday and the remainder during the week. The beef will be conveyed to the wharf from the freezing works in railway waggons specially constructed for the purpose, so that the carcases can all hang on hooks instead of being carried in the waggons in layers, as is done with other refrigerated meat.
The Avelona Star also loaded at Gisborne, Napier and Wellington, and in addition to chilled beef from Auckland the vessel’s cargo includes a large quantity of refrigerated produce as well as general cargo.
The first shipment of chilled beef from Auckland was despatched by the steamer Sultan Star, which left Auckland for London on January 12. Her cargo consisted of about 7000 tons of New Zealand produce, including 1308 quarters of chilled beef. Two other Blue Star line vessels, the motor-ship Tuscan Star and the steamer Doric Star, are en route from London to New Zealand to load for London. Both vessels will load a quantity of chilled beef. The Tuscan Star is due at Napier on February 19 and the Doric Star at Gisborne on February 28.
