WOMEN’S INSTITUTES.
Eltham: In the absence of the president Mrs. T. Fountaine presided over a meeting of the Eltham institute on Wednesday. As a mark of respect to the late Mrs. H. G. Carman, a member of the institute, a two-mipute silence was observed. A demonstration of wool quilt-, ing was given by Mrs. R. D. Dagg, Kaponga. A basket, the. work of Mrs. M. McGarry, made from beach rushes, was on view and its finish drew favourable attention. A competition for sewing buttonholes resulted: Mrs. W. Ricketts 1, Mrs. E. Clare 2, Mr?. C. Cooper 3. Tarata: The monthly meeting was held in the domain on Tuesday. Miss Waite presided over a rather small attendance of members,, several being away on account of harvesting. It was decided to give £5 from the proceeds of the fete held in December to the Inglewood rest room funds. A competition was won by Mrs. Swears, the prize having been , donated by the president. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Standish and Soffe. NORMANBY GIFT EVENING. The Normanby town hall was taxed to capacity on Tuesday night; when the Women’s Institute and the tennis club tendered a gift evening to Miss Hilda Franklyn, who is shortly to be married to Mr. Eric Smith, Hawera. The guest wore a frock of floral ninon with matching coatee. Mr. G. Galloway, president of the tennis club, on behalf of those present, wished Miss Franklyn future happiness and asked her to accept the gifts. The members of the institute, of which the guest had been a member since its inception, gathered in a circle and sang the institute song. Mr. Smith returned thanks. The evening was spent in dancing to ; music by Walden’s orchestra. Songs were given by Miss Pearle.*Gane and Messrs. Galjoway and Hay and elocutionary items by Miss. .Inkster, Miss Gwen McNaughton gave an exhibition of tap dancing. Accompaniments were played by Miss Gwen Chadwick. A competition was won by MP. D. Lay, Hawera. Supper was-served by a committee of ladies from the institute and the club. x WOMEN’S DIVISION. Alton-KaEaramea: The members, together with a large party of friends, held an enjoyable picnic at the Patea beach this week.
