William Gilbert, a veteran soldier of Ibstock, Leicestershire, who was known among his comrades in Flanders as “Old Bill,” has just received his war medals, 15 years after the close of hostilities. His Mons Star, General Service and Victory Medals, secured through the British Legion, have now been handed to him. Some time ago large quantities of surplus medal ribbon were sold to manufacturers of braces. Meanwhile Gilbert had to be satisfied with “red tape.”
The saddest man in Lwow (Austria) is a bookseller’s assistant who recently bought a lottery ticket. He gave it to a. restaurant keeper in payment for a meal, finding that he had forgotten his money. He has now heard that the ticket won £2OOO.
