DOWNPOUR ON WEST COAST
WASHOUT ON THE RAILWAY. ROADS DAMAGED BY SLIPS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Greymouth, Last Night. Nor-Westerly rain extended along the west coast to-day. An inch and a quarter fell at Greymouth in ten hours. Several streams were flooded. A washout occurred on the Midland railway on the Greymouth side of Rotomanu and delayed the overland express with 180 passengers for nearly five hours. The line was left suspended for a distance of a chain, over which the passengers walked on planking. Later trains to-night, however, are running overland. On the coast road a series of slips occurred four miles south of Charleston, but service cars expect to reach Westport to-night. Both Westland and Inangahura report considerable rainfall today.
