RECORDS CRASH AT BRISBANE
AUSTRALIAN SWIMMING TITLES. INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Brisbane, January 25. The Australian swimming championships, which commenced last night, are invested with an international flavour by the appearance, in addition to competitors from all States except Tasmania, of the Hawaiian, Kalili, and the English swimmer Miss Joyce Cooper, who yesterday flew from Lismore. Kalili, winning the 220 yards race, broke by one-fifth of a second the Queensland record of 2m 21 4-ss, made by the Japanese K. Takaishi at Ipswich in 1926. Kalili was ineligible for the title. Joyce Cooper finished first in the women’s 220 yards, clipping two-fifths of a second off the Australian record of 2m 42 2-ss, made last year by Frances Bult, and 11 2-5 s off the 13-year-old Queensland record held by E. Bleibtrey (U.S.A.).
