HAWKE CUP CRICKET MATCH

RANGITIKEI ELEVEN ARRIVES. MR. T. C. LOWRY NOT AVAILABLE. Mr. T. C. Lowry, New Zealand cricket captain, was unable at the last minute owing to business reasons to make the trip to New Plymouth to play against Taranaki in to-day’s Hawke Cup game, and so the Rangitikei team arrived at New Plymouth last evening without the international player. However, the team which arrived was that which defeated Wanganui in a cup elimination match recently without Lowry’s presence and should be capable of making a bold bid to-day. Against Wanganui the team was well, down on the first innings. Requiring 25(5 to win, it made the necessary score—a. fine effort in a fourth innings—with three wickets to spare. Rangitikei’s most recent game was against Geelong Grammar School. Wet, weather spoiled all chance of play on the first day. A wet wicket on the second day saw Rangitikei knock up 159 and Geelong reply with 123 for eight wickets. The Geelong side was fairly good. It beat a Wellington town side containing three or four Plunket Shield players and a Martinborough eleven. The Geelong team is made up of youths in their late ’teens, supplemented by several masters, all experienced in cricket. Lowry has not played in any matches for Rangitikei this season. The team has arrived with only eleven players because of Lowry’s inability to make the trip. They are all young and their first half-dozen on the batting list are capable of putting up good scores. Of the others Duncan made 82 against a Wellington town team last season, and was top scorer against the Geelong side. Hayward is a former pupil of the New Plymouth Boys’ High School. Harpur is at Christ’s College and has established a reputation as a stylish batsman there. Full of promise, he should be a great help to the side. The bowling inclines to steadiness, rather than brilliance. The eleven in batting order is: J. H. Marshall, M. Wysocki, D. A. Cameron (captain), T. A. Harpur, W. Hayward, A. B. Marshall, W. A. Duncan, H. C. Lambert, R. S. Fullerton-Smith, H. Towers, H. F. Low. Mr. L. J. Thompson is team manager. Mr. E. L. Mason, manager of the Taranaki representative side, welcomed the Rangitikei eleven and its manager to New Plymouth last night. Later Mr. S. O. Jones, chairman of the North Division, and Mr. P. S. Carroll, treasurer of the division, visited the team and added their welcome. The visitors are at the Royal Hotel.
