PERRY IN HIS BEST FORM

AUSTRALIAN TENNIS TITLES BRILLIANT DOUBLES SEMI-FINAL. McGRATH AND MOON FIGHT HARD. CRAWFORD AND HOPMAN BEATEN. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright Rec. 10.45 p.m. Sydney, Jan. 25. The Australian tennis championships were continued to-day in fierce heat. Results are:— Men’s doubles:—Semi-finals: Perry and Hughes (England) defeated McGrath and Moon, 6—o, 6—3, I—6, 7—5; Quist and Turnbull defeated Crawford and Hopman, 7—5, 4 —6, 3—6, 6—4, 6—4. Combined doubles: Semi-finals: Dunlop and Mrs. Westacott defeated Hopman and Miss Hall, 6—l, 6—3;, Moon and Miss Hartigan defeated .Willard and Miss Hattersley, 13 —11, B—6. Women’s doubles;—Semi-finals; Mesdames Westacott and Moles worth defeated Misses Chitty. and Lewis, 6—4, 6—3; Misses Hartigan and Valfcenburg defeated Misses Bickerton and Hall, 6—3, 6—l. Perry dominated the play in his doubles match, some of his services and drives in the first two sets being untouchable. His net play was also brilliant. In fact his all round play was far superior to anything he had shown at Sydney previously. In the third set the Australians, who thus far had been missing badly, played excellently. There was a great struggle in the last set, the Englishmen having five set-points before winning. Quist and Turnbull unexpectedly downed Crawford and Hopman. The match was evenly contested throughout. Crawford was not in the best of form, and the winners teamed perfectly. Quist was very deadly overhead. Miss Hartigan’s strong forehand drive was the match winning factor in her doubles with Miss Valkenburg. Miss Bickerton played the better for the losers. The Queenslanders, Mesdames /Westacott and Molesworth were too powerful for their Victorian opponents.
