AUSTRALIAN TENNIS TITLES ANGAS AND DUNLOP LOSE MATCH. CRAWFORD AND HOPMAN PRESSED RECOVERY BY PERRY AND HUGHES By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 10.25 Sydney, Jan. 23. The Australian tennis championships were continued to-day. The NeW Zealander, C. Angas, was defeated in the men’s doubles in which he ivaS partnered by Dunlop (New South Wales). Crawford and Hopman Were hard pressed throughout in their doubles match against Hone and Schwartz. They were troubled by the excellent serving and volleying of the giant Hone. Thompson and Moore started brilliantly against Perry and Hughes (England) and had set point for a lead of two sets to love. Then Moore missed the simplest of smashes. Thompson played great tennis throughout but Moore was not experienced enough. Hughes’ retrieving in this match was amazing. Dunlop and Angas were outclassed by the South Australians Turnbull and Quist. The New Zealander was the weakest of the four. He was frequently caught With the ball at his feet as he failed to come far enough into the net on his service, which he repeatedly dropped. Miss Wilson caused a surprise by eliminating Mrs. Westacott, the strong Queensland champion, in the quarterfinal of the women’s singles. Results are:—
Men’s doubles:—Second round: McGrath and Moon defeated Purcell and Clemenger, 6—2, 7 —5, 6—l, Crawford and Hopman defeated Hone and Schwartz, 6—3, 5—7, 11—9, 12—10; Perry and Hughes (England) defeated Thompson and Moore, 3—6, 7—5, 6—l, B—6; Turnbull and Quist defeated Dunlop (N.S.W.) and Angas (N.Z.), 6—2, 6-2, 6-4. Women’s singles:—Second round: Miss Valkenburg defeated Miss Purdy, 6—2, 6—4; Miss Bickerton defeated Mrs. McTaggett, 6—2, 6—o. Quarter-final: Miss Wilson defeated Mrs. Westacott, 2—6,
