In a Rugby League match at Gateshead Soccer ground in beautiful weather before 20,000 spectators England beat Australia in the visiting team’s last appearance by 19 points to 14 after leading at half-time by 12 to 4. Denny replaced Curran in the Australian side. ' The game did not reach its best until the closing stages when, with a terrific effort, England made victory secure, though the Australians were improving as the end neared. The Australian captain was injured temporarily, then Watson was carried off and two Australians were warned.
