WHITE WINGS ON OCEAN
HUIA VISITS NEW PLYMOUTH. Some people were under toe impression, as they watched toe 251-ton schooner Huia beating up to the New Plymouth port yesterday, that the Magdalene Vin-' nen, the world’s largest sailing vessel, which will visit New Plymouth in January, had arrived 'before schedule. The Huia arrived on toe scene about 2 p.m., when lowering clouds appeared to emphasise the size of the vessel. From a distance the sails on her mainmast gave her the appearance of greater size.
‘ The Huia left Auckland on Saturday with a cargo of explosives for New Plymouth and southern poxls. Captain Lane, in command, made a leisurely passage around North Cape, as there was no particular hurry for the cargo to be delivered. The Huia was under sail until she arrived off the port, when the auxiliary engine was used. In far-off days the Huia was one of the “crack” ships of New Zealand and Australian waters, and she has many fine passages to her credit.
The contrast between the squat and rather ugly steamers of to-day and the pleasant lines of the Huia was remarkably in evidence. The sight of white wings on the ocean was so unusual and so pleasing that large numbers who were fortunate enough to see her stood gazing until a house or contour of the land took her out of sight.
