MR. T. DONOVAN LEAVES

HIS TRANSFER TO HAWKE’S BAY. WAITARA PEOPLE’S FAREWELL. Mr. T. Donovan at Waitara .on Tuesday night entertained a number of friends, who were pleasei to have toe opportunity to bid him farewell prior io his transfer to Napier, where he will take up his railway duties next week. Included * amongst those present were men of the locomotive branch at New Plymouth and frpm other branches of toe service. Driver W. Easton occupied toe chair. Mr. Easton stated that Mr. Donovan had worked with him on the engine for some years. He eulogised him as a railway servant and as a man, saying he was respected by all with whom he came in contact, and they were all very proud of his achievements as a boxer. Mr. Easton on behalf of the railway staff presented Mr. Donovan with a fountain pen as a token of appreciation. Mr. Donovan in reply said he did not need any gift to remind him of his many friends, for he felt that both in and out of the service the people. of Taranaki had always shown their goodwill towards him. He would always remember the kindnesses he had received during the time he has resided at Waitara, and it was. with a heartache that'he Was leaving them. ' ' Appreciative speeches were made by Messrs. R. Pickering (stationmaster) and B. Dew (engine-driver) Waitara, Hunter (locomotive branch, New Plymouth), Brookes, . Worthington, White, Fahy, Rawles, Locke and others. Mr. Fahy said Mr. Donovan would be missed in many circles, and his church at Waitara would feel his departure keenly, for whenever there was anything a layman could do “Tommy” was always to the fore.

A short toast list was honoured, including that of “The Locomotive Branch” and “Other Branches,” the speakers being Messrs. Goumall; Hunter, Reardon, Blair, Brookes, Wilkinson and Todd. The toast of Mr. N. A. Burrell, Wellington (Mr. Donovan’s successor), was also honoured'. Songs were sung by Messrs. Hansen, Goumall, Tanner and Williamson. Mr. A. S. McGregor was accompanist.
