AMALGAMATION REFUSED
HAWERA ACCLIMATISATION VIEW.
DISCUSSION BY LICENSE-HOLDERS.
The Hawera Acclimatisation Society decided last night not to amalgamate with Taranaki. The suggestion was discussed by a well-attended meeting of licenseholders.
Mr. W. A. Spragg moved that the society should amalgamate, but after protracted discussion the motion was lost by 18 votes to 10. Those in favour of amalgamation maintained that the Hawera society could not continue much longer because of insufficient funds. The hatchery was in a state of disrepair, the curator was on half-time and the water in the stream was hardly fit for the rearing of trout. Mr. J. A. Duffill said that even if a new site and a new hatchery were obtained the society’s revenue would not be sufficient to maintain them.
The opponents of the motion held that the hatchery would last for a number of years. Hawera had liberated 240,000 trout this seasotj and the streams were full of fish.
